Neither true nor false, neither good nor evil? II - Cassirer, The Myth of the State, p. 283

“At these times the individual begins to feel a deep mistrust in his own powers. Freedom is not a natural inheritance of man. In order to possess it, we have to create it. If man were simply to follow his natural instincts he would not strive for freedom; he would rather choose dependence. Obviously it is much easier to depend upon others than to think, to judge, and to decide for himself. […] They suppress and destroy the very sense of freedom; but, at the same time, they relieve men from all personal responsibility.” (Cassirer, The Myth of the State, p. 283) 

Waar bij Sorel de politieke mythe mogelijks onttrokken wordt van ethische beoordeling, benoemt Cassirer heel uitdrukkelijk dat de mythe het individu zou onttrekken van persoonlijke verantwoordelijkheid. In relatie tot de Nazi-mythe lijkt dit een vluchtweg, maar wat met meer 'positieve' mythes? Draag ik verantwoordelijkheid voor mijn inzet om een meer ecologisch levenswijze erop na te houden? Draag ik deze morele waarde(n) zelf of is dit geheel ter lof van de politieke mythe (en zij die de mythe installeren)?
