Propaganda is geen mythe

“Totalitarian movements use socialism and racism by emptying them of their utilitarian content, the interests of a class nation. The form of infallible prediction in which these concepts were presented has become more important than their content. The chief qualification of mass leader has become unending infallibility; he can never admit an error. () Mass leaders in power have one concern which overrules all utilitarian considerations: to make their predictions come true. () The propaganda effect of infallibility, the striking success of posing as a mere interpreting agent of predictable forces, has encouraged in totalitarian dictator the habit of announcing their political intentions in the form of prophecy.”

Deze passage illustreert dat Hanna Arendt niet enkel het begrip van Mythe bewust niet gebruikt maar dat het begrip van ‘propaganda’ hier ook geen synoniem is. Arendt lijkt zich ver te willen houden van de niet-rationele inhoud van de mythes. Propaganda beroept zich in Arendts analyse op de vorm van het wetenschappelijk argument (als is dit significant onwaar) dat zich formuleert  als een voorspelling. In tegenstelling tot traditionele benadering dat de mythe nooit kan eindigen, wordt in Arendts analyse de voorspelling van de propaganda (door dictator en terreur) net wel voltrokken. 

Arendt analyseert hier een rationele techniek die het individu eerst ontheemt om het vervolgens te indoctrineren. De psychologische aantrekkingskracht van iets als de nationaal socialistische mythe van  een ‘Gesamtkunstwerk’ zoals o.a.  Lacoue-Labarthe analyseert in Lini Riefenstahls documentaire ‘Triumph des Willens‘  blijft hier buiten beschouwing.

We zouden Blumenbergs kritiek op Arendts ‘Eichamn in Israël’ ook in die zin kunnen interpreteren. Arendt heeft niet de Mythologische dimensie van het proces Eichman voor het funderen van de Israëlische staat gemist, ze laat dit gewoon buiten beschouwing.
