"And yet we are unable to act without leaving the present, without considering the future, which seems forever condemned to escape our reason. Experience shows that the framing of the future in some indeterminate time may, when it is done in a certain way, be very effective and have few inconveniences; this happens when it is a question of myths , in which are found all the strongest inclinations of a people, of a party or of a class, inclinations which recur to the mind with the insistence of instincts in all the circumstances of life, and which give an aspect of complete reality to the hopes of immediate action upon which the reform of the will is founded."

Bij Sorel staat de politieke mythe gericht op de toekomst. Zowel het wat als het wanneer van die toekomst blijven weliswaar onbekend voor Sorel. Het kaderen van de toekomst als iets onbepaalds heeft echter geen grote impact op de instinctieve inclinatie om mythes te aanvaarden of de bijbehorende groep binnen te stappen. Hiermee legt Sorel de nadruk op het conflict zelf van het realiseren van de inhoud van de mythe en stelt hij dat de eventuele uitkomst, die we niet kunnen kennen, van minder groot belang is. Ondanks dat de mens niet kan weten wat de voltooiing van de mythe juist inhoudt komt deze hem wel ten goede. Bovendien heeft dit gebrek aan kennis geen invloed op het handelen van de mensen, zij zullen naar het beeld dat de mythe hun geeft blijven streven.
